One million plus letters/parcels pile up due to travel restrictions

More than one million letters and parcels have piled up at the Central Mail Exchange (CME) and at provincial level due to the prevailing travel restrictions which have hampered normal delivery, Post Master General (PMG), Ranjith Ariyaratne said.

He said that only the Postal Department’s courier service and ‘cash on delivery’ facility are operational.

“We cannot deliver normal and registered letters under the present circumstances”, he noted.

The PMG said that sorting of letters at the CME was continuing with a limited staff under the Covid-19 preventive protocol.

Post offices also remain open with a restricted staff turnout for internal duties. However, there are no public transactions except for pension and other welfare related payments on specific days.

“We don’t want the public to come to post offices on other days in keeping with the existing guidelines”, he added.
