Nuclear power plants: installation and precautions
I thank Panduka Karunanayake for his comments (The Island, May 16) on my article he has cited. Admittedly, I have not spelled out the details of the issues raised because of the technical involvement. The installation of a nuclear power plant requires deep study and planning and the expertise is available. Obviously, Sri Lanka needs foreign consultation with local participation. The issues such as location and mode of disposal of radioactive waste should be worked out taking into consideration the local constraints. These problems are not insurmountable to secure safety and detailed knowledge required is at our disposal. The International Atomic Energy Agency provides necessary advice.
