Now, lawyers to be recruited as CIs
President approves Sabry’s plan
AThe Justice Ministry and Police Headquarters yesterday (11) reached a consensus on an unprecedented plan to recruit 150 lawyers as Chief Inspectors as part of key reforms required to revamp the police.
The Justice Ministry said that Justice Minister Ali Sabry PC had received President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s nod for his proposal. The ministry has received an assurance from the Attorney General’s Department to provide the required training for them.
Minister Sabry yesterday chaired a meeting attended by DIG Ajith Rohana, SSP Ruwan Gunasekera, former BASL President U.R. de Silva, PC and Additional Secretary (Legal) Piyumanthi Peiris to find ways and means of implementing the proposal.
The ministry said that cabinet approval would be obtained soon. Public Security Minister retired Rear Admiral Sarath Weerasekera too is engaged in talks with the police top brass regarding reforms. (SF)
