Acting IGP Deshabandu Tennakoon yesterday said that action was underway to confiscate ill-gotten assets, including luxury vehicles worth over 70 million rupees seized from underworld criminals and drug lords.
Police have identified 3,320 underworld criminals responsible for various crimes living both here and abroad. The police have also identified the assets they have amassed from criminal enterprises. They have purchased lands, jewelry and vehicles from the ill-got money and all these would be confiscated, the acting IGP said.
Tennakoon said that around 100 underworld leaders currently operating from Dubai, Italy and India have been identified by the police. Some of those drug kingpins own tourist hotels in the Southern Province, he said.
Meanwhile, during a two-day operation conducted during last weekend nine luxury vehicles worth over Rs 70 million belonging to criminals were taken into custody by the police, he said.
