Acting IGP Deshabandu Tennakoon yesterday said action would be taken to confiscate ill-gotten assets including luxury vehicles worth over 70 million rupees seized from criminals.

Police have identified 3,320 criminals responsible for various crimes, living both here and abroad. The police have also detected the assets they have amassed from criminal enterprises. They have purchased lands, jewellery and vehicles from the ill-got money and all those would be confiscated, the acting IGP said.

Tennakoon said that around 100 underworld leaders, currently operating from Dubai, Italy and India, had been identified by the police. Some of those drug kingpins owned tourist hotels in the Southern Province, he said.

During a two-day operation conducted last weekend, nine luxury vehicles worth over Rs 70 million belonging to criminals were taken into custody.
