No breakthroughs in Mawanella

A number of police and CID teams had been deployed to investigate the disappearance of 15 kilos of explosives from a granite quarry in Molliyagoda, Mawanella, but they had not been able to make a breakthrough, a senior police officer told The Island.

The CID has questioned all present and past employees of the granite quarry, he said. The person in charge of the explosives been interrogated by several teams, he said.

The senior police officer said : “The owner said that he did not suspect any of his employees.”

The owner of the quarry lodged a complaint with the Mawanella police on 22 December about the alleged theft. The Mawanella Divisional Secretary, Kegalle District Secretary and the Sabaragamuwa Province Governor have been informed of the disappearance. Among the missing items are 15 kilos of ammonium nitrate, 750 grams of water-gel explosive, 20 detonators and 35 metres of detonator cord.
