Weerasena Gamage was sworn in as a member of the Ninth Parliament yesterday (24) before Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardana.

After taking the official oath/affirmation before the Speaker, he then signed the Members’ roll kept before the Secretary General of the Parliament Mrs. Kushani Rohanadeera.

Gamage filled the vacancy created by the death of H. Nandasena, a Member of Parliament representing the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna from the Anuradhapura district.

Born in 1945, Gamage completed his education at Kekirawa Madhya Maha Vidyalaya. Starting his political career in 1991, he was first elected as a member of the Kekirawa Pradeshiya Sabha from the Sri Lanka Freedom Party, serving as its Opposition leader.

Weerasena Gamage, who contested the North Central Provincial Council elections, was elected from the People’s Alliance, has served as the Acting Chief Minister for the greatest number of times.

He has also held the position of Minister of Industry and Health of the North Central Provincial Council.

In the 2020 General Election, Weerasena Gamage contested under the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna and came sixth in the Anuradhapura district Preference List. He is the Chief Organizer of the Kekirawa Constituency of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna and was also the Chairman of the Machinery Design Institute of the North Central Province. Weerasena Gamage, who is married to Malani Chitralatha, is a father of five sons and a daughter.
