NEW FACES…to light up our scene!
Of course, the old brigade must be around, not only to keep their fans happy, but also to help the new comers get a foothold in the scene here.
Moreover, the presence of new faces should also be an eye-opener for those so-called singers who are solely dependent on the lyrics stand, or their smart phones, to put over a song…on stage, and even on TV.
Early last month, the Chulpadmendra Catwalk Academy held their annual graduation and fashion show.
This event brought into the spotlight, not only talented girls and boys, aspiring to be models, but also those capable of singing.
Mayuka Aparnatha was featured in the Thursday Island of 27th April – ‘New star…on the horizon’ – and today we check out another new face.
Samithri Kanchana, who has been singing since she was a kid, says doing the David Guetta song ‘Titanum’ at Chula’s ‘Ramp Comes Alive’ was a dream come true for her.
“Although I have been singing for quite a while, performing at this show was awesome as I was on the ramp, doing my own thing, and with the spotlight on me.
“I was full of confidence”, and Samithri attributes her confidence to Chula’s training.
“She molded me into a top model and gave me the confidence to step on the ramp, not only as a model, but also as a singer.”

Samithri was very active, as a singer, while at school, participating in all the school events, and was also a member of her school choir.
She has undergone voice training, done choir/opera singing, was in the final 24 at the Yes FM Superstar contest, and studied music and dancing, in India.
Her first gig was with the band The Legends, at a wedding, singing western songs. But she also does Sinhala songs, she added.
At the Miss Tourism Sri Lanka contest, she won the Miss Talent category.
Samithri says she is now looking for bigger platforms to display her singing talent.
“I’m a stage person and I love to make my presence felt.”
