A 62-year-old man sustained gunshot injuries yesterday (05) morning at Gemunu Mawatha in Walpita.

The victim identified as Darshana Samarawickrama was en route to assume duties at his new position as the Chairman of the Cooperative Insurance Company at Battaramulla, Meegoda Police said.

The victim was admitted to Homagama Hospital.

Two unidentified gunmen on a motorcycle fired four shots with a pistol at the 62-year-old as he was entering Gemunu Mawatha in Walpita.

A spokesperson for the Homagama Base Hospital said that the victim was wounded in one of his arms but was in a stable condition.

The police said that the victim had previously served as a director of the same Cooperative Insurance Company.

The incident is currently being investigated by Scenes of Crime Officers from the Nugegoda Police Division and the crimes unit of the Meegoda Police.
