NCPA compiling list of convicted paedophiles

The National Child Protection Authority (NCPA) would compile a list of people convicted of sexually abusing children, NCPA Chairman Chanaka Udayakumara Amarasinghe said addressing the media in Colombo yesterday (07).

Amarasinghe said those individuals were likely to repeat the offences once they were released from jail.

NCPA would make a list of convicted child molesters and make this information available to relevant authorities, Amarasinghe said.

NCPA is considering whether laws can be introduced either to prevent or to restrict convicts of child abuse from entering areas frequented by children.

Amarasinghe said 1,639 cases of rape of female children had been reported in 2023, and that the number was 1,618 in 2022.Incidents of sexual assaults reported in 2022 were 1,232. The number in 2023 was 1,497, the NCPA chairman added.
