Navy repairs and restores barge service in North

The Navy repaired and restored the service of a barge belonging to the Road Development Authority. Previously used for transporting people and goods between Kurikattuwan pier of Punkudutivu island and Nainativu the barge had been out of service following severe damage it suffered due to bad weather
The barge was in a dilapidated condition partially submerged in sea near Kurikattuwan jetty.
The people of Nainativu island faced difficulties without the barge. Accordingly, on the instruction of Commander Northern Naval Area, Rear Admiral Priyantha Perera, the Command Diving Unit and technical staff commenced a salvage operation on May 17 and after 10 days of repair work they were able to bring the barge back to operational condition on May 27.
