Navy detain trawler and crew poaching in Sri Lankan waters

The Sri Lanka Navy conducted a special operation to chase away a cluster of Indian trawlers which were poaching in Sri Lankan waters at dawn today (15th March 2024). The operation led to the detention of one (01) Indian trawler and fifteen (15) Indian fishermen poaching in Sri Lankan waters off the Kovilan Lighthouse in Kareinagar.

The trawler together with the 15 Indian fishermen were brought to the Kankesanthurai Harbour and were to be handed over to the Mailadi Fisheries Inspector for onward legal proceedings.

With this recent apprehension, the Navy has detained a total of 16 Indian  trawlers and 125 Indian fishermen found poaching in Sri Lankan waters in 2024.
