The Navy brought ashore a critically ill fisherman and rushed him to hospital for treatment yesterday (07). The fisherman who was aboard a fishing trawler in seas about 85 nautical miles (about 157 km) southwest of Beruwala, had suddenly fallen sick and was in a critical condition.

The trawler ‘Deshi’ left Beruwala fisheries harbour on 01 June 2021 with six fishermen.

The Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources alerted the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC), located at Navy Headquarters in Colombo to the critically ill fisherman in need of medical attention.

The Navy sent out SLNS ‘Sayura’ to fetch the sick fisherman for treatment.

The patient was transferred to an SLN Fast Attack Craft and brought to Galle harbour, from where he was rushed to the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital for treatment.
