National Youth Sports Festival from Sunday in Colombo

The 33rd National Youth Sports Festival will be held with the participation of 3000 athletes from December 19 to 22 at the Sugathadasa Stadium.

Jointly organized by the Sports Ministry, National Youth Services Council and Sri Lanka Federation of Youth Clubs the annual event will be conducted under two categories, namely the Under 20 and over 20 age categories.

Damitha Wickramasinghe, the Director General of the National Youth Services Council said that 17 men’s and women’s disciplines will be contested during the four-day event.

The athletes who won respective events at District level will represent their districts at this youth national event where the champion teams will be presented a cash award of rupees 150,000.00 while the first and second runners up will be awarded rupees 100,000.00 and 75,000.00 respectively.

The opening ceremony of this event will be held at 3.30 pm on December 19 where the Olympic torch will be lit by Gampaha District sprinter Sadeepa Henderson, Kegalle District athlete Chamod Yodhasinghe and Galle District high jumper B.R.I.U. Kumara. They excelled in their respective events at the 2019 edition.

The closing ceremony of the championship will be held under the patronage of Sports Minister Namal Rajapaksa at 3.30 pm on December 22.
