National committee to set up to fight campus ragging
By Rathindra Kuruwita
State Minister of Higher Education Suren Raghavan says a national committee on anti- ragging has been established.
Addressing a news conference at the government information department in Colombo on Monday, he said 36 incidents of ragging had been reported during the past 12 months.
“Fifty seven students have been suspended over the incidents. We held discussions with various stakeholders for eight months before the national committee on anti- ragging was established,” he said.
Raghavan said that while the government could make laws and allocate resources to combat ragging, the final responsibility for preventing ragging rested on university teachers, and especially the Vice Chancellors.
