The only alternative the bankrupt Ranil-Rajapaksa government was left with was resignation, Inter University Students Federation (IUSF) Convenor, Wasantha Mudalige, said on Thursday, addressing the media in Colombo. The current administration did not care about the people, he said.

“How did Ranil become President? 134 Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) MPs voted for him. They were also among those who changed our Constitution to allow Basil Rajapaksa to enter Parliament. This is probably one of the most morally corrupt governments in the world,” Mudalige said.

The only reason why the Ranil-Rajapaksa government was acting with restraint was the uprising in 2022, he said, adding that it was obvious that people will have to take to the streets to oust the government.

The IUSF Convener also criticised the government’s attempts to postpone the local council elections.

“The government has tried various methods to postpone the election. First, it declared that it was bankrupt and probably destroyed any public faith left in the economy. Then, it tried issuing various circulars to hinder the Election Commission, and now it is using their henchmen in the government service to delay the poll.s This has to stop immediately, and the government must hold elections as scheduled,” Mudalige said.
