The Mirigama to Kurunegala stretch of the Central Expressway would be opened on 15 Jan., Chief Government Whip and Highways Minister Johnston Fernando said yesterday.

It covers 40.91 km of the Central Expressway. Built to avoid townships and urban areas minimising the impact on the environment, this four-lane stretch has been identified as the most beautiful section of the country’s expressways. It has been constructed as the second phase of the Central Expressway using local funds by local contractors at a cost of Rs 137 billion. The 40.91 km stretch has five interchanges with toll counters at Mirigama, Nakalagamuwa, Dambokka, Kurunegala and Yaggapaitiya.
