More vehicles stolen during first nine months of 2022 than during whole of 2021

Over 1,400 vehicles had been stolen between January 01 and September 30, 2022, across the country, Police Media Spokesman, SSP Nihal Thalduwa, said yesterday, speaking to journalists in Colombo.The SSP said 1,406 vehicles had been stolen during the aforementioned period as against 1,405 vehicles stolen in 2021.

The majority of vehicles stolen, in the first nine months of 2022 are motorcycles (1,116), followed by 311 three-wheelers, buses (12), vans (25), lorries (16), and others (12). SSP Thalduwa said most vehicles had been stolen while being parked in unsafe locations.

“We have asked motorists to remain vigilant. When you park, make sure that these are safe locations,” he said.
