More than 1.1 mn drug addicts in Colombo District

There were more than 1.1 million drug addicts in the Colombo District, IGP Deshabandu Tennakoon said yesterday at an event in Colombo.  He said 5,608 of them were addicted to hard drugs.

 “The crime rate has increased in Colombo due to this. That was also the reason why there were a lot of drug dealers in the district. We need to rehabilitate addicts while we punish the dealers,” he said.

The ongoing Operation Yukthiya is aimed at ridding the country of narcotics and crimes, according to the police. (RK)
