Moratuwa Mayor remanded for threatening and obstructing doctor

Moratuwa Mayor Saman Lal Fernando was remanded till June 11 by the Moratuwa Magistrate over Thursday’s incident where he allegedly threatened a woman doctor and obstructed the duties of health officials.

The Mayor who surrendered to the police on Friday morning was placed under arrest and produced before court.

The doctor complained to the police that she was threatened by the Mayor when she visited Moratuwa and Moratumulla Grama Niladhari Divisions on Thursday to administer Sinopharm vaccines to the people.

She said that after she declined to administer the jab on the basis of a list prepared by the Mayor, he had shouted at her and an argument had developed over the issue.

Despite the doctor asking the Mayor to allow her to do her duty as a government medical officer, he had continued to obstruct and threaten her, according to the complaint she lodged with the police after the incident.
