Minagi sets new record in women’s 1500 freestyle

16 year old Minagi Rupasinghe set a new Sri Lanka national record in the women’s 1500-meter freestyle event at the 46th National Age Group Aquatic Championships 2022 held recently.Minagi, who represented Killer Whale Aquatics and coached by Manoj Abeysinghe, clocked an impressive timing of 19:14.97 minutes to bag her first national record. She holds the junior national records for 100-meter and 200-meter backstroke events and 400-meter Individual medley. Minagi was one of the youngest swimmers to represent Sri Lanka at the South Asian Games in 2019 held in Nepal. She also participated in the Asian Age Group Championships 2019 in India.Akalanka Peiris of the Sri Lanka Army also set a new record in the 50-meter backstroke event with a timing of 26.24 bettering his previous national record. Akalanka will be representing Sri Lanka in the upcoming Commonwealth Games and FINA World Championships.
