Mihiran to lead Sri Lanka at Asian Under 22 Boxing Championships
Reigning national flyweight champion Pasindu Umayanga Mihiran is set to lead a team of four boxers at the ASBC Asian Under 22 Boxing Championships in Astana, Kazakhstan. The championship, scheduled to be held from April 25 to May 8 will attract over 400 boxers from more than 24 countries.
According to Sri Lanka Boxing Association, Umar Kremlev, the President of the International Boxing Association has supported the local federation to obtain air tickets on the request of Dian Gomes. There had been no financial backing from the Ministry of Sports.
Mihiran is one of the top medal prospects at the regional championship. His stellar track record includes securing a gold medal at an international championship in Malaysia and being named the Best Boxer at both the All-Island School Games (2022) and the National Championships (2023).
Joining Mihiran is Yasidu Premarathna, competing in the light (60kg) weight class. Premarathna, recognized as the Best Boxer at the Stubbs Shield All Island Schools Boxing Championship 2023, clinched a silver medal at the International Boxing Championship in Malaysia 2023.
Salman Faris, another promising pugilist boasts victories at the L.V. Jayaweera meet (2022), T.B. Jayah meet (2023), and the Stubbs Shield (2023). Faris also secured a silver medal at the International Boxing Championship in Malaysia.
Heshan Jayasinghe, a rising star, first made waves by winning the School Boy Championship in 2018. Since then, Jayasinghe has consistently showcased his prowess, claiming victory at the All Island Stubbs Shield Championship for two consecutive years in 2022 and 2023.
The last edition of the ASBC Asian U22 Boxing Championships was held in Bangkok,
Thailand on January 2023. This was the second edition after the first historic ASBC Asian U22 Boxing Championships which was held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan in January 2022. (RF)
