President Ranil Wickremesinghe has no mandate to implement the 13th Amendment to the Constitution fully and grant land and police powers to the provinces, Chief Incumbent of Mihintale Raja Maha Vihara Ven. Walahahengunawewe Dhammaratana Thera says.

Ven. Dhammaratana Thera said so while taking part in a protest in Colombo on Wednesday. He said that when Wickremesinghe visited Jaffna on Thaipongal Day protesters threw water mixed with excrement at police officers, who had just looked on.

“This Amendment will only lead to more political instability. If it is to be fully implemented, Ranil must ask the people. This is a man who became president with 134 votes. The MPs who voted for him are responsible for what Wickremesinghe is doing,” he said.

A large number of Buddhist monks took part in the protest, and later an official accepted a petition from them, promising to hand it over President Wickremesinghe.
