Met Dept. warns of Asani

New office-bearers of the Sri Lanka Naval Association (SLNA) called on the Commander of the Navy on 06 May. Newly-elected President of SLNA Admiral Ravindra C Wijegunaratne (Retired), who is former Navy Commander and former CDS, and others were present at the meeting. The SLNA looks after the welfare of retired Navy personnel. Commander of the Navy presented a gift to Admiral Wijegunaratne. The Meteorological Department last evening warned the deep depression over the southeast Bay of Bengal had intensified into a Cyclonic storm ‘Asani’ and lay about 900km northeast of Trincomalee.

It was very likely to move northwestwards and intensify into a severe cyclonic storm over east-central Bay of Bengal during 1.00 a.m. and 2 a.m., the Meteorological Department Duty Forecaster said.

Naval and fishing communities have been warned not to venture into the sea area until further notice, while those who are out at the aforementioned sea regions are advised to return to coasts or moved, safer areas immediately.

The Department of Meteorology says the depression over southwest Bay of Bengal had turned into a deep depression and lay centered on Saturday (May 07).

There can be very heavy showers or thundershowers, strong winds 70-80 kmph gusting up to 90 kmph associated with high seas over the aforementioned sea areas.

Wind speed can increase up to 70- 80 kmph in sea areas between (Equator – 04 N) and between (80E – 95E).
