Media discussion on govt. move to cremate Covid-19 positive victims
Youth for Justice Sri Lanka has called a media discussion on January 7 on the government’s decision to cremate Covid-19 positive victims.
The organization said the move has created several news cycles, but was aggravated when an infant was forcefully cremated last month.
The silent protest against the forceful cremation of Covid-19 victims of Islamic faith at the Borella cemetery was disrupted by the law enforcement authorities which was a direct curtailment of Freedom of Expression. The forceful cremation, as it stands now, has generated unrest among communities, it said in a news release.
“As the generation that was brought up amidst a brutal civil war and suffered its consequences, we believe if necessary steps aren’t taken to rectify the situation and allow the Muslim community to perform their last rites according to the religious beliefs, the youth will have to suffer the repercussions of the short-sighted, racially motivated decisions of the State again”, it added.
