May 9 Mahinda, June 9 Basil, will GR go on July 9?”, asks Hector Appuhamy

Moving the motion for an adjournment debate, SJB MP Hector Appuhamy told Parliament on Thursday that people have been struggling to live in recent months and have made several demands including the resignation of the President and the government.

“That struggle seems to have achieved some of its objectives. On May 9, Mahinda Rajapaksa resigned. On June 9 Basil Rajapaksa resigned. I hope that on July 9, Gotabaya Rajapaksa will resign,” the MP said.

He said that among the demands of people were many that would lead to systemic changes.

“They demand an end to corruption. Now with the resignation of Basil Rajapaksa, there is a danger of another fraudster who never had any parliamentary experience coming to the House to fill the vacancy. Such an event would lead to further deterioration of the dignity of this House.

“Basil Rajapaksa speaking at a press conference said that he became an MP to get rid of the cases against him.

Very recently he got away from the Malwana house case. So he has achieved his objective,” Appuhamy said.

He said that the new government has not yet been able to find solutions for the crises besetting the country.

“Government members bemoan the agonies and laments of the people instead of offering solutions. They say that they would provide relief to people if they get financial assistance from other countries. In effect the government says it would help people only if they get the money to do so. Do we need a government to say that? What people expect is a government that has a plan to get out of the crisis and works towards it.

“There are still some politicians in the government who do not understand the demands of the people. They still do not know what the people are agitating for on the streets. We warn such ministers that their misunderstanding will yield unfortunate results,” the MP said.
