The Maskeliya Pradeshiya Sabha has collected three tonnes of plastic bottles discarded by pilgrims visiting Sri Pada during the past three months.Secretary of the Pradeshiya Sabha S. Rajaweeran said bins had been installed to dispose of such discarded plastic water bottles along the route taken by pilgrims.

Rajaweeran said some pilgrims did not use the bins and released plastic waste into the environment.

The plastic water bottles discarded at Sri Pada are taken to a garbage recycling centre in Nallathanniya, and the recycled products were sold to the private sector, Rajaweeran said.

“There is a drinking water shortage at Nallathanniya due to the current dry weather conditions and that they are talking to the Water Supply Board to find a solution,” said Rajaweeran.
