by Ifham Nizam
The Central Environmental Authority (CEA) on Monday raided a manufacturer of banned polythene products that cause immense harm to the environment, and seized products worth more than Rs. 1.5 million, in the Homagama Divisional Secretariat Division.
Officers from the Consumer Affairs Authority and the Police Department, too, had assisted in the raids, a CEA official said.
“We raided a factory while it was manufacturing illegal polythene lunch sheets in the Atigala – Thalumpitiyagala area in the Homagama Divisional Secretariat Division. We seized about five kilos of lunch sheets and 100 kg rolls of material used for the production of illegal lunch sheets,” an official said.
The value of the items taken into custody was estimated to be over Rs. 1.5 million. The Central Environmental Authority has taken steps to take legal action against the manufacturer.
Gazette Notification No. 2034/34 dated 01st September 2017 prohibits the manufacture, distribution, sale, or display of food wrappers manufactured using polythene as a raw material in the country.
