Mannar to build its own crematorium
By Dinasena Ratugamage
Mannar District government officials and regional politicians agreed on Tuesday (31) that a crematorium should be constructed fast, considering the urgent requirement at present.
The decision was taken at a meeting chaired by the District Secretary of Mannar, Nandani Stanley de Mel.
The meeting was attended by officials of the Mannar Urban Council, urban councillors and regional health officials. The District Secretary said that COVID-related deaths were increasing in Mannar and that there should be a way of disposing of the bodies within the district.
It was revealed that there were only two crematoria in the Northern Province, one in Jaffna and the other in Vavuniya, which was not functioning. Therefore some of the bodies had to be taken to a crematorium in Anuradhapura.
