Poultry farmers yesterday agreed to reduce the price of a kilo of chicken by Rs. 100.
A discussion was held at the Ministry of Agriculture to protect the local poultry industry and make chicken available at affordable prices.
The Ministry of Agriculture said that the government had emphasised the need to protect the industry.
A senior official said that if chicken was imported, the local poultry industry would collapse.
Agriculture Minister Mahinda Amaraweera said that he would take steps to reduce the import tax on maize to Rs 25.
