LK remembered in Vienna

The Embassy and Permanent Mission of Sri Lanka in Vienna organized an alms giving on May 14 at the Embassy premises in memory of the late Lakshman Kadirgamar, former Foreign Minister of Sri Lanka.

The LTTE assassinated Kadirgamar in August 2005 at his Colombo residence.

Late Minister Kadirgamar brought a proposal to the United Nations General Assembly to give international recognition for the day of Vesak. Consequently, Vesak was declared a Day of Observance by the General Assembly Resolution in 1999.

The ceremony was attended by 40 Buddhist monks from Sri Lanka, Austria, Malaysia, Germany, Greece, Switzerland, Cyprus, Denmark, France, Norway, Sweden and Italy who were in Vienna for the inaugural assembly of Sri Lankan Bhikkhu Association in Europe.

Maha Sanga conducted religious observances and invoked blessings on the war winning military and the people of Sri Lanka.

The Diplomatic Corp, delegates of Austrian Buddhist Union and dignitaries attended the event.
