The worth of trees will never diminish, its significance continues to exceed as a result of global warming and adverse climate change taking place in today’s world. Large scale destruction of fauna and flora has led to environmental threats disrupting the forest coverage, endangered species and depriving the future generations of cleaner air (Oxygen)to breatheo.
As a means of supporting the cause of reforestation, the Lions Club of Sri Jayawardenapura Kotte (District 306 C1) initiated a mega tree planting project with the support and guidance of the Sri Lanka Army. The club members with the leadership of Project Chairman- Additional Cabinet Secretary Environment Protection Lion Dilip Benadict,Club President Lion Nalaka Hapugoda and Maj Gen Indrajith Bandara inaugurated planting trees across five acres of land in Kallaru Manner, Wilpattu Border on January 3.
The project value of Rs. 600,000.00 was funded through personal contributions by Club members, sponsorships, Sri Lanka Army and other well wishers. The club intends to continue the project by planting trees in the coming years. The planted trees will be under the care of the Sri Lankan Army for a period 5 years.
The Project Chairman Lion Dilip Benadict believes that this project will encourage the community to become more sensitive towards the environment and make active measures to combat climate change.
