Liberia too invites SL High Commissioner to monitor election
Sri Lanka’s High Commissioner in Kenya, Kana Kananathan, is in high demand on the African continent for election monitoring roles having now been invited by the Liberian government to serve as an observer of the upcoming October 10 presidential and parliamentary elections.
In the recent past Kananathan has served as an election observer in Kenya, Nigeria, Sierra Leone and Zimbabwe.
Diplomatic sources say that his selection for this role by several African territories is a testament to the high regard he is held on the continent and appreciation of the work he has done in several election observation missions already completed.
In Liberia Kananathan will be joining the team of three former presidents of African nations , African Union, Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) , European Union, and Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa ( COMESA) in monitoring the elections.
Some 2,471,617 registered voters among Liberia’s estimated population of 5.4 million will elect Liberia’s new President, 15 Senators, and 73 members of the House of Representatives.
Incumbent President George Weah of the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) is seeking re-election for a second term.He faces 19 other candidates, including former Vice-President Joseph Boakai of the Unity Party and Alexander Cummings of the Collaborating Political Parties.
