Larger role for agriculture in building a developed country
The cabinet has approved a proposal for a national policy framework seeking a larger role for the agriculture sector in building a developed Sri Lanka by 2048, the Department of Government Information said on Tuesday.
A department statement stressed the need to increase productivity of the country through efficient and effective utilization of resources in the sector.
It is urgent to modernise the country’s agriculture to achieve the objectives of increasing farmers’ income and productivity, market regulation, increasing export-oriented products, fostering agri-entrepreneurs by attracting the youth community to agriculture and making use of the information technology, according to the statement.
The cabinet also approved proposals for the establishment of a secretariat for the modernization of agriculture sector under the president’s office, and agriculture sector modernization services and awareness centres at divisional level.
