Lanka first to vaccinate pregnant women against coronavirus
By Rathindra Kuruwita
Between 80% and 90% of pregnant women had been vaccinated so far, Director Maternal and Child Health Dr. Chithramalee De Silva said yesterday. She said that Sri Lanka was the first country to start vaccinating pregnant women.
“Pregnant women can reserve a time and get inoculated. We monitor the health of the mother and the child until a month after the delivery to see if there are any side effects from vaccination. So far not a single case has been reported. So, I urge pregnant women to come forth and get vaccinated without any fear,” she said.
Chairman State Pharmaceutical Corporation (SPC) Dr. Prasanna Gunasena said that the decision to vaccinate children had been taken by medical experts, using available scientific evidence.
“Soon these experts will come forth and explain the reasons for their decision to the people. We have procured the necessary vaccines already,” he said.
