Landslide early warnings issued to the districts of Colombo, Galle, Kalutara, Kandy, Kegalle, Kurunegala, Nuwara Eliya and Ratnapura valid till 4pm on Sunday

The Landslide Early Warning Centre of the National Building Research Organization (NBRO) has issued landslide early warnings to the districts of Colombo, Galle, Kalutara, Kandy, Kegalle, Kurunegala,  Nuwara Eliya and Ratnapura from 16:00 hrs on 01.06.2024 to 16:00 hrs on 02.06.2024

Accordingly,
Level II landslide early warnings have been issued to the Divisional Secretaries divisions and surrounding areas of  Mathugama and Ingiriya in the Kalutara district, Udapalatha in the Kandy district, Ambagamuwa and Kothmale in the Nuwara Eliya district and Ratnapura and Imbulpe in the Ratnapura district.

Level I landslide early warnings have been issued to the Divisional Secretaries divisions and surrounding areas of Seethawaka and Padukka in the Colombo district, Thawalama,  Niyagama,  Elpitiya and  Neluwa in the Galle district, Dodangoda,  Walallawita and Bulathsinhala in the Kalutara district, Udunuwara, Gangawata Korale, Yatinuwara, Ganga Ihala Korale and Pasbage Korale in the Kandy district, Kegalle, Warakapola, Rambukkana, Deraniyagala, Ruwanwella, Bulathkohupitiya, Aranayaka, Dehiowita, Mawanella, Yatiyanthota and Galigamuwa in the Kegalle district, Mawathagama and Rideegama in the Kurunegala district, Nuwara Eliya in the Nuwara Eliya district and Ayagama, Kiriella, Eheliyagoda, Kuruwita, Kalawana, Elapatha and Balangoda in the Ratnapura district.

Special Note:
During the Landslide Early Warning period, pay attention to the following pre-landslide signs
* Development of cracks on the ground, deepened cracks and ground subsidence
* Slanting of trees, electrical posts, fences and telephone posts
* Cracks in the floors and walls of buildings which are built on slopes
* Sudden appearances of springs, emerging muddy water, blockage or disappearance of existing springs

People should move away immediately from the areas where they notice the above pre-landslide signs

People living in landslide susceptible areas should be extra vigilant and be ready to move away quickly to a safe place if heavy rain continues.

Communities are requested to follow instructions given by the National Building Research Organization (NBRO)  and the Disaster Management Centre (DMC)
