Lab reports mandatory for fruit imports
Starting from tomorrow, all food importers will be required to obtain a report from an accredited and independent laboratory from the exporting country on heavy metals, including lead, in respect of all imported edible products.
A recent survey by the Sri Lankan Ministry of Health has revealed that many imported fruit samples are contaminated with lead.
The laboratory reports will be mandatory for the release of consignments of fruits by the Customs. (RK)
