Delayed LG polls:

Opposition parties have agreed to vote with the government to secure the necessary two-third majority to amend the laws required to hold the local council polls if it was ready to expedite the proces of conducting the elections, Chief Opposition Whip and Kandy District SJB MP Lakshman Kiriella announced in Parliament yesterday.

“The government is left with no alternative but to bring a motion for the purpose of conducting the local government polls to the House and take necessary action,” Kiriella said, adding that now the government could no longer cite difficulty of obtaining the House approval for the change of election laws if it was genuinely interested in holding elections.
