The Kattakaduwa Reservoir, which supplies water to the people in Ranna, was drying up due to the ongoing drought and would be able to provide water for only two or three days, officials said.

Some 12,500 families dependent on this scheme are facing serious drinking water shortage.

Agriculture Minister Mahinda Amaraweera yesterday instructed the Mahaweli Authority officials to take steps to divert water from Chandrika Wewa to Kattakaduwa Reservoir to overcome the problem.

Accordingly, steps were taken to provide water through the water diversion structure to provide water directly through the canal from the Chandrika Wewa to Kattakaduwa Reservoir.

The main lake that supplies water to the Angunukolapelessa Reservoir Scheme, the Eraminiyayawewa, has also dried up, hence the minister decided to start the restoration work of the particular tank.
