Karuna Amman alias Vinayagamoorthi Muralitharan, former Eastern Province LTTE commander, has been appointed the District Coordinator of Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa for Ampara and Batticaloa.

Karuna received his appointment yesterday from the Prime Minister at Temple Trees.

Muralitharan contested the last parliamentary election from the Ampara District as a coalition party of SLPP, but was unsuccessful. Having mustered around 30,000 votes, he had asked the Prime Minister for a position to serve the people who voted for him. The TNA lost its Tamil representation in the Ampara District primarily due to Karuna grabbing a large chunk of Tamil votes there.
