Karu thanks EC for free and fair poll

Former speaker Karu Jayasuriya yesterday urged all Sri Lankans to come together to develop the country after the election. “Everyone must understand that winning and losing are part of the electoral politics,” he said.

“71% of Sri Lankans came to the polling centres, despite worries about the pandemic. I thank them for doing so,” he said.

Jayasuriya called the election a victory for all those who had taken steps to combat COVID-19. Their efforts convinced the people that it was safe to come to the polling centres.

“The Election Commission showed the importance of independent commissions for protecting the civil and political rights of the people. I thank the three commissioners for ensuring a free and fair election despite many obstacles placed before them,” he said.
