If the government does not hold elections, on March 09, the National People’s Power (NPP) will take to the streets with hundreds of thousands of people, NPP leader Anura Kumara Dissanayaka warned.

“The people of the country have been waiting patiently because they know an election is coming up. If elections are not held, people will be on the roads whether the NPP exists or not,” he said.

The NPP is committed to protecting the people’s franchise, Dissanayaka said. Elections are the basis of representative democracy.

“We urge the Government Printer, and other senior officials, not to be tools of the government for narrow personal gain,” he said.
