JVP sees more money printing to give relief package
NPP MP Dr. Harini Amarasuriya told The Island yesterday that the so-called Rs. 229 bn relief package offered by the government was nothing but an additional burden on the economy.
“This has been done with the intention of showing the people that the government has done something for them. The government has to borrow money or print it.
“It is likely that the government would opt for printing more money and distributing it them among the people. This would be seem a short term solution but it will not address the problems such as high inflation and the debt crisis. This offer would also not solve the current problems of gas and food shortages. It cannot help solve the problem of the collapse of livelihoods of people. This may have temporary results but after sometime it is we people who will have to suffer the consequences because it would be us who will finally have to pay for the cost of this decision,” Dr. Amarasuriya said.
