JVP complains to CID about fake news on website targeting their Leader
The JVP yesterday lodged a complaint with the CID against what it alleged as a fake news, published on a website, and circulated via social media, targeting party leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake.
Former JVP MP Sunil Handunnetti lodged the complaint. Associated with him was Party’s legal counsel Attorney-at-Law Sunil Watagala.
The complaint said that a fake news item has been published on a website with the headline “JVP has spent Rs.50 million to boost Anura’s image.
Campaign details exposed with evidence.”
Speaking to journalists outside the police headquarters former MP Handunnettti said that the news item was just another example of the government’s bankrupt propaganda.
“This is a government failing in all aspects and facing widespread opposition, we strongly reject this defamatory news.”
“We have no affiliation with the advertising agency mentioned in this article, and it is a news item created solely to insult our party.”
He said that the news item had been prepared using forged rubber stamps to look like it was issued by the party and using forged signatures of the party leaders.
Attorney-at-Law Watagala said: “We can also see how fast the CID will investigate this. We have lodged the complaint with evidence. We hope that the CID will show the same enthusiasm and fast results in the way it does whenever a government politician lodges a complaint with them”.
