Joes, Mahanama march on, Thomians end league without a single win
Under 19 Division I Cricket
by Reemus Fernando
St. Joseph’s and Mahanama consolidated their top positions in their respective groups in Tier ‘A’ while S. Thomas’, Mount Lavinia concluded a lackluster league stage without a single win in the Under 19 Division I cricket tournament continued on Monday.
In a clash between two strong teams inclusive of Sri Lanka Under 19 players, St. Joseph’s ended St. Anthony’s unbeaten run as Sadeesh Jayawardena and Shevon Daniel scored unbeaten half centuries to record nine wickets win. That was after restricting the visitors to 118 runs.
It was the Joes’ fourth victory in the tournament.
Mahanama continued their unbeaten run when they pulled off an exciting eight runs victory over Gurukula. Mahanama have secured the group champion position with a match to spare as they have four wins against their name. Their counterparts in the group are yet to record more than two wins.
The day’s most stunning performance came from Moratu Vidyalaya who beat Lumbini by three wickets. With Devapathiraja also securing a victory over St. Joseph Vaz’s yesterday, the group ‘Y’ of Tier ‘B’ will have a tight competition with Moratu Vidyalaya, Isipatana and Devapathiraja fighting for the top position.
Meanwhile, S. Thomas’ had an unusual finish to the league stage as they conceded their fourth defeat at the hands of St. Sebastian’s to culminate the tournament without a single victory.
Wesley, Maris Stella and St. Sylvester’s were the other teams to register victories in the Division I tournament on Monday.
