Jenith wins Under 16 chess title
Sri Lanka National Youth Chess Championships 2022
Jenith Wirathunge remained unbeaten to win the Under 16 title of the Sri Lanka National Youth Chess Championships 2022 as he scored 6 ½ points out of seven games. Jenith beat S.M.P.P.B. Mawalagedara, I.M.W.P. Illankoon, Rahel Karunaratne, Vivash Samarakoon, B. Janukshan and S.D.B.K. Senevirathne and drew with Yonal Sumanathilake to win the title and the gold medal.
S.D.B.K. Senevirathne of Maliyadeva College won the runner up position and the silver medal as he scored six points. His only blemish was against eventual champion Jenith.
Vinudha Shenal Gunatilake of Royal College, Colombo scored six points and was placed third according to better tie breaker after tying with six more players, namely, Nabil Nazar Mohamed (Gateway College), Kavishka Gimshan (Asoka Vidyalaya), Sathsindu Minura (Royal College), Dishal Nimsara (Sri Chandananda Buddhis College), Malisha Sasvidu (D.S. Senanayake College) and Thesandu Aken (Royal College).
The Sri Lanka National Youth Chess Championships 2022 organised by the Chess Federation of Sri Lanka commended on April 20 and will conclude on June 5. Earlier, district qualifying events were held in 19 districts where around 5,000 chess players participated. This particular Under 16 open event was held from May 26 to 28 at Sastrananda Vidyalaya, Dehiwala according to Swiss System in seven rounds.
The top three players of this championship will now get the opportunity to compete at International Youth Chess events this year.
