Jaffna Mayor Vishwalingam Maniwannan held discussions with health and security officers in Jaffna on 17 August to have restrictions currently in force relaxed in view of the annual celebrations at Nallur Kovil.
The Mayor earlier told senior policemen that they had placed a number of road blocks along the entrance to the Kovil and that caused grave inconvenience to devotees.
Policemen said that those barriers had been erected based on the advice of health officers who wanted to minimise the number of devotees that enter the kovil premises at one time.
Thus, the police alone could not remove the roadblocks, they have told the mayor.
Following the meeting, the mayor said that he would ensure that devotees would be able to take part in the Kovil activities during the annual festival.
