Island-wide travel restrictions to continue sans a respite till June 7

The island-wide travel restrictions will continue uninterrupted till June 7, Army Commander, General Shavendra Silva, announced.

The restrictions were earlier scheduled to be lifted temporarily on May 31 and June 4 to enable people to buy essential foodstuffs. However, it was decided on Friday to continue with the travel ban in force without interruption till June 7.

However, the public will be allowed to purchase essential goods and medicines through mobile services conducted via Divisional Secretariats and & District Secretariats.

The temporary easing of the restrictions on May 25 saw chaotic scenes with people clamoring to buy essentials with scant respect for Covid-19 preventive guidelines.

This led the Army Commander to remark that he was “disappointed with the behaviour of the people”, and since then, speculation was rife that the travel restrictions will be enforced without a respite till June 7.
