Medical waste believed to be disposed of by indian hospitals have been washed ashore at Nagadeepa and nearby coastal areas recently. Fishermen have complained to regional health officials, who have promised an investigation.

The beaches are strewn with used syringes, phials, and other hospital waste.

Indian hospital waste was washed ashore from time to time, a fisheries association representative said. Such waste was sighted along the Puttalam Coast previously.

“At that time, the Marine Environment Protection Authority said the hospital waste had come from Kerala, where there were floods,” the representative said, expressing concern.
