India dominate Sri Lanka Athletics centenary year half marathon

Karthik Kumar and Sanjivani Jadhew of India bagged the titles of the Half Marathon conducted by Sri Lanka Athletics to commence its centenary year celebrations on Saturday. Held under Nestomalt banner, the race which was inaugurated by the Minister of Sports Namal Rajapaksa at the Diyatha Uyana in Battaramulla saw thousands of athletes competing for top honours.

Karthik Kumar finished in a time of 1:05:02 seconds to win the men’s title, while his countryman Dharmendra clocked 1:07:15 seconds to finish second.

For Sri Lanka S. Shanmugeshwaran clinched the third place in the men’s half marathon while M.S.P.M. Perera and H.M.C.S. Herath finished second and third respectively in the women’s race.

Apart from India, Bangladeshi and Maldivian athletes also took part in the event but no one was able to challenging the Indian might.

In the five kilometer event, Dulaksha Madushan of Bandaranaike MV, Gampaha and Oshadini Nilumika of Mary Immaculate Convent, Negombo were the boys’ and girls’ winners respectively.
